On December 1st, the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Chemical Society Located in Taipei was celebrated at National Cheng Kung University in Tainan City. CSJ Executive Director Nobuyuki Kawashima and CSJ President Kohei Tamao were invited to attend the ceremony, and presented their Taiwanese hosts with a gift commemorating the occasion.
The Chemical Society Located in Taipei was launched in Nanking, China in 1932. The annual conference, held on December 1st and 2nd, opened on the morning of the first with an anniversary ceremony. Society chairman Chien-Hong Cheng began with opening remarks, and was followed by the presidents of various chemical societies expressing congratulations. CSJ President Tamao expressed congratulations and presented a commemorative gift. Afterward, Professor Tien-Yau Luh of Taiwan National University and Professor Eiichi Negishi of Purdue University gave special lectures.
That afternoon, in a session chaired by the Korean Chemical Society President Duckwan Lee, Hong Kong Chemical Society President Raymond Wai-Yeung Wong, Chemical Society Located in Taipei Director Ling-Kang Liu, Singapore Chemical Society President Andy Hor, and CSJ President Kohei Tamao gave lectures. Professor Tamao discussed the relationship between the Japanese and Taiwan Chemical Societies, and as examples presented the story of Professor Tetsuo Nozoe, who from 1937 to 1948 worked at Taipei Imperial University and in his research in Taiwan isolated hinoki thiol, and also that of Professor Yuan T. Lee, who became an honorary member of the Chemical Society of Japan. Professor Tamao called upon the younger generation to strengthen relations between the two cultures.
