Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) are important tools to elucidate structural and electronic aspects of paramagnetic cofactors in proteins. In this account, emphasis is given to in-depth EPR/ENDOR characterizations of the quinone-type and flavin cofactors in ethanol dehydrogenase and photolyase, and the relative positioning of substrates.

Supramolecular biomaterials can be obtained via a modular, self-assembly approach using hydrogen-bonded supramolecular polymers or self-assembling oligopeptide fibers. This results in materials that fulfil the biomaterials trinity of tuneable mechanical properties, degradability and bioactivity, and importantly are dynamic in nature.

The CuI-catalyzed Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition can be used in the efficient and divergent synthesis of mechanically interlocked molecules, such as [n]rotaxanes and [2]catenanes. The simplicity of the required precursors and the straight-forwardness of the reaction establish this type of “click chemistry” as an indispensable strategy for the synthesis of mechanically interlocked molecular compounds.

he application of substituted 1-lithio-1,3-dienes as building blocks for the preparation of cyclic compounds and linear compounds are briefly summarized. Results have revealed that the essential factor which makes 1-lithio-1,3-diene derivatives useful and unique as building blocks is the intra-cooperation between the alkenyllithium moiety and the butadienyl skeleton.
