The SEM image of a photo-polymerized 3D structure in SU-8 resist. The 3D structuring of materials will open the possibility to control optical properties, will create new photo-chemical reaction pathways and new materials based on the engineered nano-/micro-structures.

This account article describes the synthesis of a cyclic benzenoid system, [10]cyclophenacene, through a one-step deca-fold addition reaction to [60]fullerene, and its metal complex, double-decker buckyferrocene [(FeCp)2(C60Me10)]. Theoretical studies on the electronic structures of finite-length single-walled carbon nanotubes are also described with respect to the structure of the cyclophenacenes.
