Development of a New Production Process for N-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidone
Y. Shimasaki,* H. Yano, H. Sugiura, and H. Kambe
[Full Text PDF(J-STAGE)] Free Access Article
The first continuous production process for N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP) was developed. The starting materials are γ-butyrolactone (GBL) and monoethanolamine (MEA). The process consists of two stages: the synthesis of N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-pyrrolidone (HEP) from GBL and MEA, and the vapor-phase dehydration of HEP to NVP.

Ferromagnetic Interactions in Non-Kekulé Polymers. II
M. Hatanaka* and R. Shiba
[Full Text PDF(J-STAGE)] Free Access Article
 |
Ferromagnetic interactions in two-dimensional non-Kekulé polymers were analyzed. We constructed two-dimensional Wannier functions in non-bonding crystal orbitals (NBCOs), and PNBCO (product of NBCO) was as their product. The ferromagnetic interactions were attributed to anti-parallel-spin instabilities in PNBCO.

Resonant Microwave Irradiation Effect on the Emission Process of an Organic Electroluminescent Material
H. Okimi, Y. Sakaguchi,* K. Asada, and M. Hara
[Full Text PDF(J-STAGE)]
 |
Spin conversion in the electroluminescence of poly(p-phenylenevinylene derivatives) was enhanced by the removal of electricity. This is due to the decrease of the exchange interaction between the component radical ions whose magnitude increases with the applied voltage.

Evaluation of Metal Toxicity in Chlorella kessleri from the Perspective of the Periodic Table
K. Fujiwara,* Y. Matsumoto, H. Kawakami, M. Aoki, and M. Tuzuki
[Full Text PDF(J-STAGE)]
 |
The toxicities of 33 metals (36 species of metal ions) in a micro-alga, Chlorella kessleri were investigated and compared to several parameters such as ion radii, stability constants of several ligands, solubility products, and heats of formation (enthalpy). Intracellular distribution of zinc was also determined by using a zinc-fluorescent probe under a confocal laser microscope, and the result shows the intracellular distribution of pH could be an important factor for the intracellular distribution of zinc.

The complexes [M(OAc)2{(MeImSe)2}] (M = Zn, Cd, and Hg), prepared by reaction of metal acetates with bis(1-methylimidazolyl)diselenide in methanol, on thermolysis gave metal selenide quantum dots which were characterized by UV–vis, photoluminescence, XRD, EDAX, SAED, and TEM. The crystal structure of [Cd(OAc)2{(MeImSe)2}] was unambiguously established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
