Surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy enables in situ monitoring of electrochemical reactions at time-resolutions ranging from microseconds to milliseconds without the interference from the bulk solution. Simultaneous infrared and electrochemical measurements provide significant insights into chemistry and physics at the electrochemical interface.

Fluorescence and cycloaddition reaction induced in 2,5-distyrylpyrazine crystal by ionizing radiation were studied by means of pulse radiolysis and 60 Co -ray radiolysis. The G -value obtained 4-5 by ionizing radiation for the decrease of the olefinic double bond suggested efficient activation of DSP in the irradiated crystal.

A zinc complex, [ZnL(PhCOO)2 ] 1 , where L=2 ,2' -thiodimethylene bis(benzimidazole), has been designed so as to keep tetrahedral coordination around the zinc. 13 C NMR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies have revealed the molecular structures of two chemical species, [ZnL(PhCOO)2 ] and [ZnL2 ]2+ , and the kinetics of ligand exchange reactions in a solution of 1 .

Photothermal Expansion of Droplets in Emulsions Detected by the Transient Grating Method

A nonlinear optical effect due to the thermal energy after photoexcitation of a light-absorbing chromophore in micro droplets (oil in water and water in oil) were investigated by a time-resolved transient grating method. The temporal profiles were analyzed in terms of the droplet heating, thermal expansion and subsequent cooling process consistently.

Phytoglycogen is precipitated by the addition of various nonionic surfactants. The dispersion stability of phytoglycogen in phytoglycogen and surfactant-coexisting systems depends on the hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) and the aggregation number of each surfactant. A schematic representation of the phase behavior is shown in the figure to the left.

Reactions of N(22 D) with Alkane Hydrocarbons to Produce NH( X3 - )

Illustration

NH(X3 - ) could be detected as products of the reactions of N(2 D) with simple alkane hydrocarbons. The nascent state distributions of NH showed little dependence on the complexity of the hydrocarbons. The intermediate complexes which lead to the production of NH must be short-lived.

Migration of ortho -Positronium in Polymer Films

The diffusion coefficients of ortho -positronium (o -Ps), estimated from the quenching rate constants in its annihilation, are much smaller than those expected from a simple size extrapolation of the relation between the diffusion coefficients of gas molecules and their diameters, as shown in the Figure, suggesting that the migration of o -Ps follows a different mechanism from that of gases.

The highest-temperature solid phases of perchlorate and hexafluorophosphate were revealed to be CsCl-type cubic, while that of nitrate was NaCl-type cubic. Isotropic rotations of cations and anions were observed in both type cubic phases. Self-diffusion of the cation was detected only in the CsCl-type cubic phase, while that of the anions is considered to be excited in both types of cubic phases.

Electronic Structures of the Hckel Ring and the Mbius Ring

The Green's function method is applied to the study of the electronic structures of the Hckel- and the Mbius type species. It is shown in analytical form that several orbital properties of the 4m+2 membered Hckel ring correspond to that of the 4m membered Mbius ring.

The presence of the rotator phase was revealed between 345 and 457 K in C12 H25 NH3 Cl, where cations perform rapid the 2-D self-diffusion as well as the axial rotation about the long axis, accompanied by conformational disorder together with random tumbling of this axis.

Chromatographic adsorption isotherms of acetone and benzene diluted in CO2 on silica gel show a maximum, and then decrease with increasing pressure; they increase with increasing temperature after a crossover is met. The isotherms are qualitatively similar to those obtained from IR spectroscopy.

A New Macrocyclic Ligand-Based Sensor for Nickel(II) Ions

A PVC-based membrane electrode of a tetraaza macrocyclic ligand shows a Nernstian response for nickel ions over a wide concentration range (0.294 to 58.69×102 mg dm-3 ) between pH 3.0-7.0. The sensor exhibits excellent selectivity for nickel ions in the presence of normal interferents, and has been used for estimating Ni2+ ions in milk products and hydrogenerated vegetable oils.

Several iron(III) complexes with the hexadentate schiff-base ligands of N4 O2 donor sets were synthesized; these are the 1 : 2 condensation products of linear tetramines (3,3,3-, 3,2,3-, 2,3,2-, or 2,2,2-tetramine) and salicylaldehyde, acetophenone, or benzophenone derivatives. The crystal structures, Mssbauer spectra, and magnetic properties of the complexes were examined.

The intercalation of cytosine derivatives into -TiP was successful. In addition, cytarabine release tests from the cytarabine intercalation compound were performed in the solutions containing Na+ . The release of cytarabine became slower by intercalation into -TiP, and was influenced by the pH value and the concentration of Na+ in the test solution.

Strontium sulfites with four forms of crystals, included spherulite and spindle form, were prepared in the metasilicate gel. The optimum conditions controlling the crystal form were influenced by the pH value in the gel and the temperature effect. According to the amount of nuclei in the gel, the crystal form will be changed.

Several dinuclear vanadium(III) complexes with a heptadentate dinucleating ligand containing a bridging alkoxo group (dpot, tphpn, or hpnbpda) were prepared and characterized by X-ray crystallography. The vanadium(III) center adopts a distorted octahedron, a capped octahedron, or a pentagonal bipyramid, depending on the properties and arrangement of the ligand.

N ,N' -Bis(1-pyrenylmethyl)-1,4,10,13-tetraoxa-7,16-diazacyclooctadecane ( 1 ) and N -(1-pyrenylmethyl)-1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxa-16-azacyclooctadecane ( 2 ) were synthesized and found to display unique photophysical properties in the presence of the guest metal salts. The binding of metal ions to the diazacrown ether 1 cavity inhibited exciplex formation and changed the distance between the two pyrenyl groups.

A bioassay system was developed using marine bacteria with adhering properties. Novel nitroalkanes, untenines A, B, and C, were isolated from the Okinawan sponge Callyspongia sp. N ,N -dichloro-2-(4-nitrophenyl)ethylamine, 2-(4-nitrophenyl)ethyl isocyanide, 2-(4-nitrophenyl)ethyl isothiocyanate, and N -[2-(4-nitrophenyl)ethyl]dithiocarbamate significantly inhibited the growth of marine attaching bacteria. Long-term field testing of these compounds is in progress.

Substituent effects on solvolyses of 1-aryl-1-(3-chlorophenyl)-2,2,2-trifluoroethyl and 1-aryl-1-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-2,2,2-trifluoroethyl p -toluenesulfonates or bromides in 80% aq ethanol at 25 °C were analyzed by the Yukawa-Tsuno equation. The correlation results were discussed in terms of varying resonance demands and changing coplanarity of two aryl -system with extremely deactivated carbocationic centers in the transition states.

In contrast, syn -stereoselectivity was observed in a radical addition to (Z )- 2 .

A combination of nitrogen dioxide and water has been found to provide a new agent for the transformation of various alkyl methyl ethers to the corresponding carbonyl compounds under mild conditions.
